Working with operators

To work with operators, you have to stack them. Operator stacking works a lot like a tree, we have roots and leaves and branches.

The root of a tree is always an Export Operator. On the other end(s) of the tree, there are the leaves, operators that accept no input. Every branch must begin with a leaf.

An operator will send its output to any operators that touch its underside. Some operators accept or need more than one input. If an operator is stacked in an illegal way, it will be marked red.

To pop up the Add Operators Window, use the hotkeys 1 (add miscellaneous operators), 2 (add texture operators), 3 (add mesh operators) or a (add operators from the last used category). right mouse button Double-clicking the right mouse button will also pop up the last used category from which you added operators.

While the add operator dialog is open, you get a new set of keyboard shortcuts. For example, while pressing a would normally open the add dialog, pressing a with the Add Texture dialog open will add a Merge Operator to the operator page. Escape closes the add dialog.

Every operator has three activity indicators on the left side. A red LED means that the operator is currently selected. A green LED means that the operator is currently being viewed in the View Window. A blue LED means that the operator output has been calculated and cached. left mouse button Double-click an operator to display its output in the View Window.
